Who are we?

We are a locally based Community Interest Company . Any profits we make are put directly back into the company for the benefit of our customers and service users.

WE ARE YOUR ONLY LOCAL RE-USE COMPANY!

What do we do?

We seek to re-use electrical appliances for the benefit of the local community. We do this by receiving donated goods that people no longer have a need for (e.g. they have bought a new appliance and need to dispose of the old one), and take them away at no cost to the donor.

We supply a warranty of between 3 and 6 months. These goods are then made available to local people at low prices, with further discounts for those on a range of benefits.

Goods that cannot be re-used are stripped for spares and the remainder is sent for recycling

How do we work?

Work is carried out by our Domestic Appliance Engineer and dedicated volunteers. We seek to invest in our volunteers by providing them with training as needed and giving work experience. Volunteers come from all walks of life and we support them to get back in to work and raise their skill levels. As more donations come in we will increase our paid employees.

Why do we do it?

Our view has always been that too many of Furness and the South Lakes appliances have been diverted from re-use in our area and instead been sent up the West Coast at no benefit to our local people. We seek to intercept all discarded white goods and therefore save them as refurbished items for the benefit of our community.

We urge you to donate your items to us directly. We offer a free collections service so it will not cost you a penny AND it will benefit people in your local community

Our motto is: KEEP IT LOCAL

THE WEEE REGULATIONS

WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) is basically electrical waste products and covers everything from large appliances to batteries & calculators.

In the past WEEE was put directly into landfill. However since the 2000’s it has been increasingly seen as a wasteful and harmful method of disposal. The regulations originally wanted appliances etc. diverted from landfill and recycled.

In recent years this has changed and the emphasis is now on re-use of whole appliances as the first step rather than recycling in a waste hierarchy (actually the second, the first is “prevention”)

Re-use

Helps the environment:         In 2012 alone 1.5 million tons of CO2 were saved by re-use in UK

Helps create jobs:                  In 2012 alone 11,000 full time equivalent jobs were supported by re-use  organizations. Volunteers accounted for 15,000. The taxpayer saved £93M in welfare payments.

Helps us all:                            By keeping goods in circulation longer, and by offering more affordable products, UK households benefitted by an estimated £6 Billion from the re-use sector

Helps the 3rd Sector               Charities, Social Enterprises and other 3rd Sector organizations benefit from re-use by an estimated £430M annually
